People drink alcohol for many reasons, and everyone can have their own unique story about when and why they started drinking. However, drinking motives fall into 4 basic categories:

1. Dealing with unpleasant emotions (coping)

2. Trying to fit in (comfort)

3. Desire for the pleasurable effects associated with alcohol

4. Enjoying the company of others (social)

The first two are called negative motives for drinking and are used to "face" any difficulties, dissatisfaction with life. The last two are called positive drinking motives and are related to the use of alcohol for fun.

Do you drink mainly to get through a difficult situation or do you drink for fun? The answer to this question will help you see how problematic alcohol can become for you in the future.

People who drink to cope with their problems are more likely to develop an alcohol use disorder.

Individuals who experience trauma, or who are more prone to depression or anxiety, are more likely to report drinking alcohol to ease the burden of hardship.

However, this does not mean that recreational drinkers are at no risk of developing problems. Alcohol is an easily addictive substance, especially if consumed in large quantities and frequently.
