There are two types of couples who divorce after 20+ years of marriage. One version has two people who tried their best, and the other didn't.

Making a mutual effort to maintain emotional connection is the greatest preventative strategy any long-term love can employ. Shocking new evidence shows that long-term monogamy and marriage are under new pressures. They are called gray divorces and if you are married, you should be aware of them.

It's not infidelity that's driving the divorce rate these days.

It has absolutely nothing to do with us Millenials, divorce is actually lower than ever in post-Gen-X marriages.

It is the 50-70-year-olds who are ending their relationships, which for decades have been purely mechanical "autopilot" relationships.

Financially independent 50-year-olds who expect to live into their 100s are rethinking the game. Many middle-aged people are taking a hard look at the health of their relationships and choosing something different.

The hypocrisy of monogamy is not that people are getting divorced, but that they have tolerated loveless, sexless marriages for an average of six years or more before ending them.

Many middle-aged and older adults are divorcing after decades of unmet emotional needs and imagining a future either alone or with someone new who can fulfill them.

These divorces often follow infidelity. Sometimes sexual, of course. However, increasingly for non-sexual reasons. It is an emotional betrayal, a neglect or outright denial of essential needs, desires and preferences.
