A woman from Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for posting on her social media accounts.

Nourah Bint Saeed al-Qahtani was convicted by Saudi Arabia's Specialized Criminal Court on charges of "using the internet to harm the (Saudi) social fabric" and "violating public order using social media".

Little is known about what Qahtani posted on social media to earn him such a long sentence, and as a result, the Washington-based organization Daën is continuing to investigate the case.

This sentence follows a similar one just a few weeks ago, where Salma al-Shehab, a mother of two and PhD candidate at the University of Leeds, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for following and retweeting activists on Twitter.

Shehab's sentence also included a 34-year travel ban, which some Western countries have raised concerns about.

The events took place shortly after US President Biden raised concerns about human rights in Saudi Arabia.
