You're not alone in thinking that the best way to remove blackheads from your nose is to use a clean cotton swab, two fingers and a mirror.
But let's tell the truth. Although removing blackheads in this way is surprisingly a satisfying process, it is not the best way. Using your fingers can lead to inflammation, hyperpigmentation and the appearance of other types of acne.
So what's the best way to clear those clogged pores once and for all? Some dermatologists share their tips on how to get rid of blackheads and how to prevent them.
Let's start!
One of the best ways to prevent blackheads is to simply wash your face at the end of the day.
"Remove all traces of makeup before going to bed at night," says Dr. Tina S. Alster, dermatologist. "Makeup and dirt clog pores and create blackheads."
In addition to keeping your skin clean, it's also important to keep it hydrated. Dr. Hirsch recommends looking for the words "non-comedogenic" on all skin care product labels. Those two little words mean you're treating your skin with ingredients that won't clog pores.
Dr. Tracey Evans, another dermatologist, adds that medications that control oil production in your skin and encourage skin cells to turn over [like retinoids] are also very helpful in preventing blackheads.
How to get rid of blackheads at home:
Home remedies to treat blackheads include using active ingredients found in certain products.
Salicylic acid: Dr. Hirsch cites salicylic acid (SA) as a dermatologist favorite when it comes to over-the-counter products that help with blackheads. SA is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which penetrates deep into the skin to unclog pores and control excess sebum production. It is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties to soothe the skin.
- Chemical peels: Medical grade HA and BHA can exfoliate skin and clear pores of excess buildup. The treatment can also help with hyperpigmentation.
A gentle laser: A gentle laser treatment can reduce large pores, dark spots and acne scars.
