· Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the outcome of the battle for the Donbas region would determine the course of the war, adding that Ukrainian forces were suffering "painful losses" in Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Russia said it would set up a humanitarian corridor on Wednesday for stranded civilians seeking to flee fighting in Sievierodonetsk.
Zelensky reiterated call on the West to send strong weapons to Ukraine. Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said the country had received only 10% of what it asked for and there was no way to victory without the help required.
US President Joe Biden said temporary shelters would be built along the border with Ukraine, including Poland, to help export grain.
· Pope Francis said the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow was "perhaps somewhat provoked" as he recalled a conversation on the eve of the war, in which he was warned that NATO was "easily at Russia's gates".
