Bajram Begaj has been elected the new president of the Republic of Albania.
In the voting that took place in the plenary session in the Assembly, which was attended by 83 deputies, Begaj was elected with 78 votes in favor, 4 against and 1 abstention.
Of these, 74 were deputies of the Socialist Party, 8 of the opposition, respectively of the Socialist Movement for Integration and the Party for Justice, Integration and Unity and 3 from the Social Democratic Party (via Euronews Albania). The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, and the Democratic deputies in support of him boycotted the process shortly before the vote.
