Why do some children call their parents by name? Should I?

Have you heard children call their parents by name, instead of "mom", "dad"? For some parents, this is acceptable. They feel good and believe that this reflects a peer-to-peer relationship. For someone else, referring to the parent by their name is disrespectful.

Consider Bart from the TV show, 'The Simpsons'. Under normal circumstances, Bart refers to his father as "Homer", but his mother as "Mom". When Bart wants to show a little love to his father, he calls him "daddy".

The Oxford English Dictionary acknowledges that there is no evidence as to where the word "mom" originated. However, the word "mom" (mother) was born from the much older word "mama". A word similar to "mom" is found in almost every language spoken on Earth. As for the word "dad", there are more variations.

What if your child calls you by your first name? First, think about how it makes you feel and act on it.

Second, consider the following reasons why a child calls you by name and then decide what is best for them:

- Today's children have different morals and beliefs, this of course also because of their families or the examples served to you in schools, among peers.

- They are looking for a friendly and "carefree" relationship with the parent.

- They are in the imitation stage.

- They are exploring what it is like to be an adult.

- Some parents are happy when their children call them by name and ask for it themselves.
