Day 26 of the war: What is the situation in Ukraine

· Ukraine rejected Russia's request for Mariupol to be surrendered. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said there could be no talk of a surrender and that Russia had been informed of the response.

US President Joe Biden will travel to Poland this week to discuss international efforts to support Ukraine and to "impose heavy and unprecedented costs on Russia" for its occupation, the White House has said. Discussions will follow Biden's meetings in Brussels with NATO allies, G7 leaders and EU leaders.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has said that he believes that if negotiations with Russia fail, it will mean "World War III". He told CNN that he was "ready for negotiations" with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that "we must use every form, every chance to have a chance to negotiate."

· Ukraine's human rights spokeswoman Lyudmyla Denisova said Russian troops had abducted residents and taken them to Russia. "Several thousand Mariupol residents have been sent to Russia," she told the Telegram.

· Ten million people - more than a quarter of the population - have fled their homes in Ukraine because of Russia's "devastating" war, the head of the UN refugee agency said on Sunday.

· China's ambassador to US has said his country is not sending weapons to Russia. He said China was sending food, sleeping bags and other aid, "not weapons and ammunition to either side". But he did not rule out the possibility that Beijing may do in the future.

· Germany has agreed to a contract with Qatar for the supply of liquefied natural gas that will help the country get rid of its dependence on Russian energy. It may take several years for the agreement to enter into full force. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia said it was increasing oil production to meet global demand.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is "close", despite skepticism from Western governments . The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations warned on Sunday that there was little immediate hope for negotiations that would end the war.

· 11 Ukrainian political parties have been suspended due to their ties to Russia, according to Zelensky. The country's National Security and Defense Council decided to ban parties from any political activity. Most of the parties affected were small, but one of them, the Opposition Platform for Life, has 44 of the 450 seats in the Ukrainian parliament.
