A historic steel bridge in the Dutch city of Rotterdam will be partially dismantled. Reason? Simply because the superyacht built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos must pass, local authorities announced.
The Bezos yacht, which is worth 430 million euros, is too large for the iconic Koningshaven bridge, which dates back to 1878 and was rebuilt after being bombed by the Nazis in 1940 during World War II.
"It's the only way to the sea," a Rotterdam mayor's spokesman told Agence France-Presse, adding that the Amazon founder would pay the bill for the operation.
The decision has angered residents and some members of the local council in the Netherlands because after a renovation in 2017 it was promised that the bridge, known to locals as De Hef, would no longer be dismantled.
The mayor's office stressed the economic benefits and jobs created by the yacht construction, but promised that the bridge would be rebuilt in its current form. According to the Guardian, the process will take several weeks and is expected to take place this summer.
