Worst Covid variant ever: What do we know so far?

What is the new Covid variant and why is it troubling?

Scientists have discovered a new variant of Covid-19 known as B.1.1.529 and are working to understand its potential danger. About 100 confirmed cases have been identified in South Africa, Hong Kong, Israel and Botswana.

B.1.1.529 has a very unusual number of mutations, which are troubling because they can help it bypass the body's immune response and make it more transmissible, scientists have said. Any new variant that is able to avoid vaccines or spread faster than the dominant Delta variant could pose a significant threat.

How does B.1.1.529 compare to other variants?

Scientists describe B.1.1.529 as the worst variant they have seen since the beginning of the pandemic. It has 32 mutations in the spike protein, part of the virus that most vaccines use to boost the immune system against Covid. This is about twice the number associated with the Delta variant.

Mutations in spike protein can affect the ability of the virus to infect cells and spread, but also make it harder for immune cells to attack the pathogen.

What travel restrictions are being set?

Germany, Japan, France, Bahrain and the Czech Republic are among the other countries that have suspended flights. The European Commission plans to ban flights from the region.

Is there anything I can do to protect myself?

Yes. The advice remains to get vaccinated if you have not already done so. Wearing masks is also very important!
