OnlyFans, the subscriber-only platform that is often considered synonymous with pornography, has announced that it will block adult content, following pressure from payment processing companies.
The company will continue to allow some posts that contain nudity, but "any content that contains explicit sexual behavior" will be banned and creators may focus on more commonplace content.
OnlyFans earned billions of dollars as more than 130 million users registered while many sites were quarantined. Although OnlyFans insists that there is a wide range of people creating content for the site, ranging from chefs to yoga instructors, the most popular content on this site is pornography.
OnlyFans said the new rule, which will take effect in October, came as a result of pressure from banks and payment processors who raised concerns about the material on the platform. Instead of losing the opportunity to receive payments, which would ruin the business, OnlyFans chose to stop the adult material that provided him with money and fame.
"To ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform and to continue to have an inclusive community of creators and fans, we need to develop our content guidelines," a site spokesman said.
Payment processing companies are increasingly controlling which pornographic sites are able to transmit material. Last December, Visa and Mastercard briefly banned payments to websites owned by internet pornography giant MindGeek, following reports that had "revenge pornography" uploaded without the consent of the people involved. Financial businesses withdrew only when MindGeek deleted tens of millions of unverified videos from sites such as PornHub.
