Facebook is considering releasing a version of its popular Instagram platform, for kids under the age of 13, to allow them to use the platform "safely". Currently the company does not allow persons under this age to create an account on the platform.
A Facebook spokesman told The Guardian that the company was exploring a parent-controlled version of Instagram, similar to the Messenger Kids app which is for kids ages 6-12.
"We are working on building additional products that are suitable for children, managed by parents," said the spokesman.
"We're exploring bringing a parent-controlled experience to Instagram to help kids keep up with their friends, discover new hobbies and interests, and more."
In a blog post earlier this week, which did not mention the proposed new Instagram service, the company noted that although people were asked to enter their age when registering on Instagram, there was nothing to prevent them those who lie during registration. However, the platform said it would overcome this problem by using "machine-learning" techniques, so that the current Instagram platform, really only has +13 users.
