If you grew up in a western country, you are probably used to sleeping in a crib, but when you walk into a Japanese bedroom, you probably won't find a single bed. There are many reasons why the Japanese prefer to sleep on the floor, and this is not just for reasons of space in small apartments or for the preservation of traditions. It turns out that sleeping on the floor can have quite interesting health benefits.
1. May relieve back pain
Sleeping on a firm, flat surface is good for your back and can relieve pain. Even in a soft bed you will certainly feel comfortable, but your mattress may start to sag over time, causing the spine to bend and lead to back pain.
2. It can improve your attitude
If you sleep in the right position and your back gets the right support, it will be much easier for you to keep your back straight during the day.
3. May improve blood circulation
When you sleep on the floor, your weight is evenly distributed and there is less pressure on different parts of your body. This brings good blood circulation. Sleeping in a natural position will also prevent numbness and tingling sensations caused by poor circulation.
4. It can help you get up on time
If you find it hard to leave the comfort of your pillows and get out of bed in the morning, you are not alone. When you sleep on the floor, you get the right quality of sleep, but you probably won’t be comfortable enough to want to lie there all day.
There is a group of people who are not suggested to sleep on the floor at all:
- Allergies: Because the floor collects dirt and dust, people who are prone to allergic reactions should not sleep on the floor.
- People with bone disease: If you are already suffering from a serious bone disorder, sleeping on the floor can do more harm than good, as it can put more pressure on your joints.
- The elderly
- People who have a lot of cold at night
