Father and 11-year-old transgender child collaborated to bring to market

Jamie Alexander and his 11-year-old son, Ruby, created "Rubies," which will be the name of a clothing line "suitable for transgender girls."

The brand includes swimwear, lingerie and more and all aim to shape the look of "nonbinary" bodies.

“The outside [of the swimwear] is made of an elastic material, and inside, there are two layers of mesh that hold everything in place,” says Ruby. "No need for folding or large fillings up front."

The father explains that when Ruby herself was 4 years old she spent more time tying a towel as a skirt around her waist than building castles in the sand.

At the age of one, Ruby was obsessed with princesses and wanted to act like Rapunzel. Instead of long hair, she wore a sheet or other piece over her head.

In the third grade, the father and daughter were clear that the child was ready for the transition.

"She just wanted to wear the same clothes as her friends," says Alexander.

"In some cases, it seemed like she would not be able to do this safely until I started exploring options for trans girls," he said. "I found that there are some places where you can buy bikinis and lingerie for trans people. Ruby tried some, with different levels of comfort."

Thus, their experiences prompted them to create their own brand.

"I would like to imagine a world where children could wear whatever they wanted, regardless of their anatomy. Let's find ways to help our children express themselves safely."

Ruby says he likes working with Dad. She is learning about cost, cost and customer service and is dealing with product modeling.
