England's third Lockdown may not be enough to quell the new variant of the coronavirus, according to a professor of infectious disease epidemiology.
This comes after Boris Johnson announced at a press conference, accompanied by the chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whity, and the government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance.
In a televised address to the nation, the prime minister urged people to stay indoors.
For 8 consecutive days, the UK has recorded more than 500,000 cases daily.
Johnson says more than 1 million people in England are already infected with the coronavirus, while Professor Whity said that 1 in 50 people in England have the virus.
The Prime Minister has confirmed that the government will take measures to test people entering the UK, to prevent an increase in cases and to stop "repairing the virus".
