'Avengers' and 'Game of Thrones' star dies

English actress Diana Rigg, best known for her roles in theater, film and television - including "Avengers" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - has died at the age of 82.

Rigg, who rose to prominence in the 1960s for her role as Emma Peel in The Avengers, had a diverse career, including Lady Olenna Tyrell in the HBO hit Game of Thrones, a series for which she admitted in 2019 that she had never seen him.

Rigg also played Countess Teresa di Vicenzo, or Tracy Bond, the first and only wife of James Bond, in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Her agent said Rigg passed away peacefully this morning (September 10). Her daughter, actress Rachael Stirling, said Diana was diagnosed with cancer in March and "spent the last months happily reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and pride in the profession."

Before "Avengers", Diana Rigg had a successful career in theater and performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company. On Broadway, she was nominated for two Tony Awards in 1970 and 1992. She also won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress for the BBC miniseries "Mother Love" in 1989 and an Emmy Award for her role as Mrs. Danvers in "Rebecca". (1997 adaptation).
