Another very disturbing phenomenon for our country in recent years has been suicide. In 2019 alone, 216 people ended their lives, or 2.3% more than a year ago. According to INSTAT data, published in Monitor, the highest number of suicides is seen in men, while the age group most exposed to such an act is 55-69 years old, with 28% of total suicides.
One of the cities with the highest suicide rate in relation to the population is Gjirokastra. Despite the fact that young people have been increasingly at risk for an act like this for a variety of reasons, there has been a significant decline over the past year.
Causes such as depression, economic inability, social problems often become the reason why Albanians choose to end their lives. After Gjirokastra, Berat is listed among the cities with the highest number of suicides, while Kukes with the lowest.
