Men have always had botox treatments, but now they have increased so much in number that we can dare to mention a new word – brotox (from bro – boy/friend and botox).
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the amount of money men spend on Botox treatments has increased 400% since 2000.
It seems that the beauty industry has reached a point where it is having trouble making women feel insecure about their appearance, so it has turned its attention to men.
"Men have always been associated with health and wellness in relation to athletics, strength training, and bodybuilding. These activities not only display skill, but also focus on body image to some extent," surgeon Jaclyn Tomsic explains to Fortune.
"Botox and other cosmetic procedures offer another route to feeling better. With more and more men not only getting Botox treatment, but being more open to it, the trend will continue to grow and I think that this is a great thing.”
Some factors that may be contributing to the increased popularity of botox in men include:
Competition in the workplace: Many men report that they are motivated to get Botox to stay competitive with younger colleagues. Many people find that maintaining a youthful appearance helps them fight ageism in the workplace.
Social media posts: Posting on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and dating apps makes men want to show their best face. Many men have gone to see the movie "Barbie" and apparently have been very alarmed that they don't look like Ken.
Encouragement from others: Some men may be motivated to have cosmetic procedures by their partners.
Whatever the reason, botox is no longer a "women's job".
