Hopes for a cure to rescue coronavirus infections have risen after experimenting with a 79-year-old Italian man. He, infected with COVID-19, has had improvements after treatment with the drug made 10 years ago to cure Ebola.
Doctors have given the elderly, Remdesivir, which scientists around the world have tested even earlier, in hopes of finding a cure.
Officials in Liguria, the place where the patient lives, suggest that the elderly person is in good health and could go home after 12 days in the hospital.
This experimental drug has also proved successful for a woman seriously ill in the US and for 14 other Americans who found coronavirus positive.
This news comes after another experiment that scientists did, dealing with HIV drugs, but which resulted in a failure.
The 79-year-old Italian, who was given remdesivir, was hospitalized March 7 infected with coronavirus and the decision to experiment with the drug was made by doctors at the San Martino hospital in Genova, where he was being treated.
At least for him, the experiment worked and the virus disappeared.
