Art: A wall-mounted banana sells for $ 120,000

A wall-mounted banana in Art Basel Miami went on sale this week for a modest price of $ 120,000. And according to Artnet, which trades artwork, two of the three works have been sold. The third costs $ 15,000.

The work by Maurizio Cattelan was presented Wednesday by Perrotin, a Contemporan art gallery that is also founded in Paris and has a lifelong relationship with the artist.

This is Cattelon's first work to grace an exhibition in 15 years.

Entitled "Comedian," the work of art consists of a banana bought at a Miami grocery and a short adhesive tape. There are three works and all three were for sale.

Emmanuel Perrotin, the gallery's founder, told CNN that "bananas are a symbol of world trade and a comic tool, they have dual meanings." Perrotin added that the artist transforms Bondan objects into "carriers of criticism and glory."

Potential buyers should know that there is no guidance on what to do if bananas start to rot.

According to a press release by Galerie Perrotin, the artist came up with the idea a year ago.

"At that time, Cattelan was designing a sculpture in the shape of a banana," the statement read. ?Every time he traveled, he would take a banana with him and hang it in the bedroom for inspiration. He made some patterns: first in resin, then in bronze and painted in bronze. Eventually it came back to true banana. ?

Cattalan is known for sculptures that defy the public. One of his works - a $ 6 million 18-carat gold toilet - was torn down and stolen from Bleinheim Palace in England.

The functional toilet titled "America" was part of Cattelan's "Victory is Not an Option" exhibit.
