Scandal in Portugal: The doctor brings a faceless child to life

A Portuguese obstetrician-gynecologist has been suspended after giving birth to a child with no nose, no eyes and no part of the skull.

The parents of the infant named Rodrigo were unaware of the baby's severe physical abnormalities and only discovered it when he came to life.

The responsible medical council voted and suspended Dr. Artru Carvalho on negligence. Similar cases of negligence by the same physician have also been made public.

Reports of these incidents in the Portuguese media have revolted the public. Dr. Carvalhno has not commented on the charges.

What happened to Rodrigo?

Rodrigo was born on October 7 at Soo Bernardo Hospital in Setubal, 43 km south of Lisbon.

His mother was cared for by Dr. Carvalho, who performed three ultrasound scans during pregnancy and never expressed concern for fetal health.

When she was six months pregnant, the mother did another 5D echo, more detailed than others at another clinic. That eco revealed that the baby had major abnormalities, but Dr. Carvalho rejected these hypotheses.

"He told us that sometimes, some parts of the face are not visible in the eco ... like when the baby's face is attached to the stomach," Rodrigo's mother told local television.

After Rodrigo came to life and the abnormalities became undeniable, his parents were informed that the baby would survive for only a few hours.

However, two weeks later, the boy is still alive and under the care of doctors.

What are the other cases?

After the publication of Rodrigo's case, other parents began sharing their stories with Dr. Carvalho.

Currently, six complaints have been filed against him.

In the case of a baby born in 2011, disfigured, with deformed legs and irreparable brain damage, the doctor in charge was Dr. Carvalho.

His mother, Laura Afonso, told the newspaper Pubico that she complained to the prosecutor about the doctor, but her case was ignored.

Her son, already eight years old, has been operated on several times, but cannot speak or walk.

Another case mentioned is a 2007 birth, where the baby died after a few months of life. Even this case failed to be properly judged.

How was the reaction?

The scandal has shocked Portugal and raised questions about the country's health system and grievance procedures.
