Why do so many artists in this state kill themselves?

The tragic case of 25-year-old K-Pop star Sulli brought to attention the high number of South Korean artists who have died as a result of suicide.

Suicides in South Korea affect not only artists but also ordinary people. It is mainly the elderly who, because of poverty, decide to end their lives in order not to become someone else's burden.

Another reason why such a phenomenon is so widespread in South Korea is the media. According to studies, the number of suicides has increased as the media has covered the suicide of celebrities.

Likewise, other observations have shown that internet use has had a negative impact, as a large proportion of students become addicted to social networks and fall prey to forms of self-harm.

Family problems are another reason for strong impact. Many people in South Korea have become orphans or lost one parent because of the war. Nor are economic problems ruled out.

Education is another factor that drives students to suicide. Education in South Korea is extremely competitive, making it difficult to get into university.

Last but not least, mental health. In South Korea, mental illness is considered taboo, even within the family. Over 90% of victims have been diagnosed with mental health disorders, but only 15% have agreed to be treated. More than 2 million people suffer from depression, but only about 15,000 choose to treat the problem.

Because mental illnesses are considered taboo, families often discourage young people or persons who face such disorders.
