Halima Aden, 21, is the first model to pose with Hijab and Burkini for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. You understand this is the first time, but why does it matter so much?
First create an idea how the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues look like:
Genevieve Morton in 2011
Kate Upton in 2017
Ashley Graham in 2016
So superstition models, wearing a bikini, in a tourist destination.
Halima Aden's cover is many times more modest than these. The model is originally from Kenya, an adult Muslim and a practitioner of religion. She posed hijab and burkini (burka and bikini, burkini) for a magazine aimed at celebration of women's sexuality and sensuality.
"Do not change yourself, change the game," she writes on Instagram. "Everything is possible. My cover in Sports Illustrated surpasses me as a person. It sends a message to my community and to the world that women of formations, views, different religions can stand by and celebrate each other. "
Halima grew up in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. When he was a kid, he moved to the United States. Photos for Sports Illustrated were conducted at Watamu Beach, Kenya.
"I constantly think of myself 6 years old, in the same place, refugees in the camp," Halima told SI. "To grow in America, to experience the American dream and to return to Kenya to be photographed in the most beautiful places here - is an incredible story.
