An artist from South Africa with a brain tumor played some notes on the guitar while operating to remove the tumor mass.
Musa Manzini's guitar play helped surgeons differentiate neural pathways in their brains and their inability. Manzini underwent local anesthesia during a clever kraniotomy at Inkosi Albert Luthuli in Durban.
"His action increased the chances of security for us. We could see in real-time the indications of what we were doing, "Dr. Rohen Harrichandparsad, one of the neurosurgeons.
The aim was to test Manzini's ability to play music, which requires a complicated interaction of some areas of the brain. The patient was given the guitar at the end of the six-hour operation.
During such operations, doctors stimulate brain areas with poor electrical current to understand which areas control functions such as moving or speaking. If a patient fails to speak when the current is applied to a certain area, doctors understand that the area should be condensed during the tumor removal.
Dr. Basil Enicker, another surgeon, said they removed over 90% of the tumor and that the musician is fine.
