Many people think they have it all figured out about relationships and divorce. However, the rising divorce rate suggests otherwise.
Divorce can be difficult for family members and can even lead to long-term psychological consequences. So there's still a lot to learn about the end of a relationship, and even more so, a marriage.
Read below three statistics about divorce that you probably didn't know:
1. 50% of those who divorce regret their decision
A survey of 2,000 men and women in the UK who are divorced or have ended a relationship of at least five years found that more than 50% of respondents regretted the breakup. In fact, 42% said they would consider getting back together with their ex-partners.
2. More marriages mean more divorces
If you belong to the category of people who believe that the more years pass, the more likely they are to find the person they will spend their life with forever and thus get married more than two or three times, the statistics do not support your theory much. According to the data, the divorce rate for a first marriage is between 41% and 50%. For a second, it starts from 60 and reaches 67%, while for a third, the divorce rate is between 73 and 74%.
3. The distance between work and home affects relationships
You may never have thought about how one affects the other, but if your commute from work to home takes more than 45 minutes, your marriage is at risk. At least, that's what research from Umea University in Sweden has shown.
The study's lead author, Erika Sandow, followed millions of couples from 1995 to 2005. Of those, 14% divorced because one or both partners had to commute at least 45 minutes to work. On the other hand, only 10% of couples who had to commute less often ended up divorcing. Here's another reason why long commutes and hours wasted in traffic are no fun.
