Although most countries in the world celebrate it on March 21, Sultan Nevruzi, or as it is otherwise known as the "Persian New Year", is celebrated on March 22 in Albania.
What is Nowruz Day?
Nowruz, otherwise known as (Noërouz, Nooruz, Navruz, Nauroz or Nevruz), means "new day" in Persian and has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years. Traditionally it starts as soon as the vernal equinox occurs. In the Iranian calendar today is the first day of the year which also dates to the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Nowruz is celebrated in the Middle East, Central Asia, India, Georgia, Albania, etc.
This day is considered holy as it marks the birthday of Imam Ali in the Kaaba and according to legend it personifies the resurrection and the birth of hope for humanity.
Usually this celebration lasts for three days. Bektashi believers exchange visits to each other and then perform religious rites.
As for the table, water, eggs, candles and greens should never be missing. People help those in need, and according to tradition, believers distribute milk and sherbet, symbolizing the purification of body and soul.
On the days of the holiday, the Bektashis plant flowers in their houses or place olive branches at the entrance of the gates.
Although in our country the day of Sultan Nevruz is not celebrated with the same intensity as in the countries above, this day marks an official holiday in our calendar. In addition, the majority of Albanians do not forget to celebrate by setting the table with the food symbol of March 22.
The traditional dishes of Nevruz are the pie with the coin inside, which according to tradition, whoever finds it among the family members is waiting for a good year. Roasted meat and of course sultjas and ashura should not be missing from the table.
