The study shows that arthritis medications can help patients with severely ill

Two drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis - a long-term autoimmune disorder that mainly affects the joints - can help save the life of one in 12 patients in intensive care where they are treated for Covid.

The UK National Health Service (NHS) will start using the drug tocilizumab for Covid-infected patients, as health officials said that in 800 patients, the drug reduced the risk of death by 24%.

Another arthritis drug, sarilumab , seems to do the same thing, not only saving lives but also shortening the time patients spend in intensive care.

Although the findings are promising, it must be said that the study has not been reviewed internationally by colleagues and further research is needed to see if these drugs can damage the immune system.
