The mixture of different vaccines produces a strong immune response against the virus, according to a recent research.
Scientists in Oxford observed the effect of a mixture of vaccines, where people were given either two standard doses of the Oxford / AstraZeneca or Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, or a combination of both.
The study found significant changes in antibody levels against the virus depending on the vaccines. Two doses of Pfizer produced the highest levels of antibodies, while one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine followed by one dose of Pfizer was almost as potent.
"You definitely have a stronger immune response if you take a dose of Pfizer after the AstraZeneca vaccine," said Matthew Snape, associate professor of pediatrics and vaccine at Oxford.
Other combinations were not as effective. In the UK it is being considered whether different vaccines will be offered to the same person in the future. Based on the latest study, a dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, followed by a Pfizer, can be an effective strategy.
