Whether you're without power, in a room without air conditioning, or trying to save money, there are ways to feel a little cooler without artificial cooling.
The body should not be too hot for too long, as too much heat can damage the brain and other organs, according to the US National Institutes of Health. Sweating is the body's natural cooling system, but when it isn't enough. Therefore, read below some valuable tips:
Hydrate: When you're hot and flushed, hydration is the first and foremost step to cooling down.
Take a shower with cold water: A cold shower helps to cool the body by reducing the temperature. For a cooler sensation, try peppermint soap or shampoo – the menthol in peppermint oil activates receptors that tell the body that something you're eating or feeling is cold.
Apply cold compresses to your neck or wrists: These pulse points are areas where blood vessels are close to the skin, so you'll get cold faster.
Use air freshener: Place the air freshener facing the rooms window to exhaust the hot air.
Close the curtains and blinds: If you have windows where the sun shines, close the curtains or blinds to keep the heat out.
Sleep in the right materials: Cotton is one of the best materials to keep you cool.
Close the doors of unused rooms: If no one is using a room that has no ventilation or fresh air, close the door to that area to keep the fresh air confined to certain areas of the house.
Avoid using the stove/oven: All the heat will not only make the cook in the family feel tired, but it will also raise the temperature of the whole house. Look for summer recipes that are easy and effortless.
Surround yourself with plants: If you have a small free space, terrace, porch or balcony, especially in the part of the house that is most exposed to the sun, fill it with plants. They will serve as a heat shield.
