If you're thinking about ending a relationship with a friend who doesn't truly love you and is a toxic person in your life, set a tactic and follow it closely. You can let the friendship fade until it ends on its own, or you can end it yourself, just like breaking up with a partner.
If you have decided that you will make new rules, you can be a specific person or not, it depends on your desire and energy. You may not return messages as often, or go out as little as possible. Your life will change and whether the friend in question will adapt to this is up to him/her.
While the gradual fade is suitable for two friends who want to separate from each other because they are both going in different directions in their lives. One writes less, accepts less to go out, and so does the other. The result is painless.
The formal division is a bit more complicated. Plan what you have to say in advance, so that you don't have an impulsive conversation and you don't get hurt.
During the conversation, when you explain the reasons for the "separation", you often use the word "I". For example: "I have changed," and "I no longer have the will to maintain this society." It is not a good idea to attack your friend and shove in his face all the negative things you think about him and the gestures that led you to make this extreme decision.
Just be kind and empathetic, as you would want your friend to treat you. Finally, you have shared beautiful, important and painful moments together. It is not worth dismissing them with some bitter words.
