It has long been known that the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest diets, and months ago it was even declared the healthiest diet in the world . Recent research shows that one of the main ingredients in the Mediterranean diet - olive oil - can improve heart health.
The researchers presented their research to the American Heart Association. Their analysis dates back to 1990 and shows that consuming just over half a tablespoon of olive oil reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 15% and the risk of coronary heart disease by 21%.
Olive oil can replace unhealthy, saturated and stem-based acids with a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduces inflammation and improves cholesterol.
Animal-based fats such as margarine, butter and milk fat are less healthy than olive oil when it comes to heart health.
Also important is the type of olive oil, which may be common, or extra virgin olive oil, which has a higher amount of polyphenols associated with less inflammation.
However, it should be noted that heart health includes physical activity and a balanced diet. Olive oil helps, but does not work miracles.
