Vaginal infections are not uncommon for women, but in a good number of cases, women may have one and not know it.
Some infections may come with no symptoms, while for others, some of the most common symptoms are:
- Itching
- A change in the amount of urine
- A change in the color of urine
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Pain during sexual intercourse, etc.
Symptoms of vaginal infections can also vary based on the cause of your infection.
Some of the most common infections are:
- Bacterial infections, where usually some bacteria are found in your vagina.
- Infections caused by Candida albicans, one of the most common infections. Many things, including antibiotics, can reduce the number of anti-fungal bacteria in your vagina. This reduction can lead to infection.
- Trichomoniasis, a vaginal infection caused by a parasite and can be contracted through sexual intercourse.
Irritants such as soaps, detergents, perfumes and vaginal contraceptives can irritate the vagina. This can cause inflammation.
- In some cases, your doctor may not be able to determine the cause of your vaginal infection. This condition is known as nonspecific vulvovaginitis. It can occur in women of any age, but is more common in young girls who have not entered puberty
