The Delta variant of the coronavirus is expected to become globally prevalent within a few months, the World Health Organization warned. Recently, this disturbing variant was discovered in 13 other territories, bringing to 124 the total number of places where it has appeared.
"It is expected to compete with other variants very soon and become the main circulating line in the coming months," the United Nations health agency said in its weekly epidemiological update.
Agence France-Presse reports that the WHO said 3.4 million new Covid-19 cases were reported last week through July 18th.
"At this rate, it is expected that the number of globally reported cases could exceed 200 million in the next three weeks," the WHO said. Currently, more than 191 million cases are reported globally.
Cases increased by 30% in the WHO Western Pacific region and by 21% in the Europe region.
The highest numbers of new cases were reported from Indonesia (350,273 new cases; increase by 44%), Britain (296,447 new cases; increase by 41%) and Brazil (287,610 new cases; decrease by 14%).
