Sam Asghari admitted that his marriage to Britney Spears is over.
In a statement posted online Thursday, the model and fitness trainer admitted the desire for privacy "seems ridiculous" but asked the media to be "kind."
"After six years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold the love and respect we have for each and I wish her always the best."
"Things happen. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous, so I'm just going to ask that everyone, including the media, be kind," he said.
Documents filed in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday cited "irreconcilable differences" for the divorce and stated that the couple had separated almost three weeks ago.
The filing says Asghari intends to get financial support from Spears and have her pay for his lawyers. According to the documents, the value of Spears and Asghari's assets, and those they jointly own, has yet to be determined.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, a representative for Asghari denied claims made by the tabloids that he allegedly threatened to release lewd material about Spears unless concessions were made to their prenuptial agreement.
Spears has not publicly commented on the split, but took to Instagram on Wednesday to tell fans she was "going to buy a horse soon."
They met in 2016 and married in June 2022.
Their marriage was the first for Sam Asghari, 29, and the third for Spears, 41. She married Kevin Federline, with whom she has two children - Sean and Jayden - in 2004 and divorced him in 2007. She married childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004, but the marriage was annulled after just 55 hours.
