It is a sad fact that today, almost everyone knows someone who has had breast cancer problems. MBC is the only form of breast cancer that kills. However, as MBC (Metastatic Breast Cancer) takes the lives of 115 people every day in the US, very little funding is raised to fund research into new treatments and cures.
These shocking statistics explain why more and more people are embracing a redesigned ribbon of breast cancer that goes beyond pink. Created by Self in 1992, the famous pink ribbon is immediately closely related to the early discovery and celebration of survivors, but when it comes to MBC the odds are that there are no survivors, just an extension of life for a while, through some treatments. Thus, a ribbon that is not only pink in color, aims to raise awareness of the need to direct funds towards the development of lifelong treatments and why not, also discover new solutions.
In the new ribbon, the green represents the triumph of spring over winter, life over death; light blue symbolizes healing and spirituality; and a thin pink stripe overlap signifies metastatic cancer originating in the breast.
There is often a misconception that there is a cure for breast cancer, but this is unfortunately not always the case.
