Why we lie on April 1st and how this day became a global tradition

Why we lie on April 1st and how this day became a global tradition

Today is the day when you can lie without feeling bad (or so it is claimed). But where did April Fool's Day come from and why does the whole world "celebrate" it?

In Albania we know it as “April Fools' Day,” while in many countries it is known as “April Fools' Day.” A day dedicated to pranks, jokes, and those “white” lies that, at least theoretically, shouldn't hurt anyone.

Its origins are not entirely clear, but it is believed that this tradition has existed for centuries. There is evidence that it was celebrated in Great Britain at least since the 19th century, initially mostly by children, but over time it spread to adults as well.

One of the most popular theories links the origin of this day to France. In 1564, the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar was made, moving the celebration of the New Year from the end of March to January 1. However, not everyone immediately accepted the change and continued to celebrate the New Year in early April. They were ridiculed and called “fools,” and thus, according to this theory, the tradition of April Fools’ Day was born.

Later, the British turned this date into a fun custom, playing pranks on each other every year. In fact, in some cases, the jokes have been so believable that they have been taken seriously by the public. One of the most famous examples is that of the BBC in 1957, when a report was published about the “pasta harvest” in Switzerland, showing people collecting pasta from trees.

Today, the jokes are simpler, but the tradition continues, often with little lies told just for fun.

How is April 1st celebrated around the world?

In Scotland, April Fool's Day lasts for 2 days. On the second day, people are often unexpectedly stabbed in the back.

In Canada and England, lying is only allowed until noon. After this time, the game is considered closed.

In France, Belgium, Italy, and the French-speaking areas of Switzerland, children have an interesting custom of placing a fish-shaped paper on each other's backs, without anyone noticing.

In Ireland, there is a tradition of "the fool's errand", where someone is sent with a letter from one person to another, until it is discovered that the letter simply says: "Send the fool to someone else."

In Germany, "Aprilscherz" is practiced, a made-up story just to fool others.

In Greece, it is believed that if you manage to trick someone on April 1st, you will have luck all year long.

Whereas in Albania, the day lasts 24 hours and the goal is simple, the trick is to be as reliable as possible.
