A former Boston College student is accused of unintentional homicide after allegedly bringing her boyfriend to suicide in May this year. The case in question is parallel to the case of Michelle Carter.
Inyoung You, a 21-year-old from South Korea, was so "physically, verbally and psychologically abusive" to Alexander Urtula during their 18-month relationship that the 22-year-old killed himself. Suffolk County Prosecutor Racael Rollins said at a news conference.
"[The investigation] found that abuse became more frequent and powerful in the days and hours before Urtula put an end to life," Rollins said.
Urtula, also a student at Boston College, died just 90 minutes before the graduation ceremony, May 20. His family traveled from New Jersey to be present at the special moment.
The abuse by the young woman was witnessed by close friends and classmates of both students. They were also documented in Urtula's diary.
According to prosecutors, You sent Urtula 47,000 messages over the two-month period prior to self-sacrifice, which included phrases such as "go away," "go away," and "I, your family and the whole world will be much better off." without you."
Prosecutors said You was aware that her boyfriend was suffering from depression and had suicidal thoughts, but that did not stop her from taking a step closer to the act.
The morning of Urtula's death, You was tracing his cellphone and was present in the Boston parking lot when Urtula ended his life.
Urtula was a Biology student and had started working as a researcher at a hospital in New York.
"Alexander was a gifted student, involved in many activities while studying in BC," wrote Joy Moore, vice president for college students.
The event resembles the case of Michelle Carter, who was sentenced to 15 months in prison after forcing her 18-year-old boyfriend Conrad Roy to kill herself in 2014.
Evidence showed that Carter, then 17, sent Roy a series of messages encouraging him to kill himself.
Also, Carter spoke to Roy a few moments before he died and told him to return to the car where he was breathing carbon monoxide.
