Since the skin is the largest organ, it's no wonder that some things go wrong. Acne, warts, ingrown hairs, rashes and itching. When it comes to dermatological concerns, potentially the most difficult to discuss, of the vulva, you are not alone.
The good news is that you have many tools available to prevent or treat pesky irritations.
"Over the past few years, due to the popularity of spin classes and stationary bikes, I've actually seen a lot more vaginal and vulva area 'scars,'" says OB/GYN Alyssa Dweck.
The irritation is caused by friction and moisture, either from skin to skin or from skin to another surface, says Dr. Dweck. This is why spin class is a major cause of vaginal skin damage, but Dr. Dweck assures that this doesn't mean you should stop going.
Here are some solutions that will help you:
Hydrate properly
Part of the problem with dry skin and irritation is that it has varying levels of moisture, meaning there is moisture or sweat that can dry it out. Whether it's sweat, discharge or menstruation – they can cause increased friction. The way to prevent all this is hydration and lubrication.
That means adding a cream between the thighs, and a suitable vaginal moisturizer or even lube before a high-friction activity, says Dr. Dweck. Plus, staying hydrated throughout the day can prevent sweating, which can lead to that annoying sticky feeling.
Do not postpone care or even a visit to a gynecologist, dermatologist
