There's no doubt that Hailey Bieber is on everyone's mind thanks to her perfect skin, the news that she's expecting, the trends she brings, and her skincare line, Rhode.
People often recreate some of her best looks or even her makeup routine, so it's no surprise that they also find Carrot, an intense tanning gel.
We admit, a tanned body, especially in summer, looks like a star, but is Carroten harmful? Chicks on TikTok are suggesting and using it so much, so it's the moment of truth.
@chloegxo04 literally just stocked up on amazon before it sells out again BUT wear ur SPF because this will make you either super tan or red lol #carroten #tanning #tan ? original sound - Cloe
Bobby Buka, board-certified dermatologist and founder and CEO of The Derm Specs, tells PopSugar that Carrot has 0 SPF, meaning it offers no protection at all from the sun's harmful rays.
Carl Thornfeldt, board certified dermatologist and founder of Epionce, shares the same opinion. He says:
"It doesn't guarantee any UV protection, so no, it's not safe to use."
Dr. Buka adds that Carroten is a one-way ticket to skin cancer, as it increases the impact of ultraviolet rays on the skin.
What if you mix Carroten with SPF?
The answer in this case is a bit more complicated. Dr. Thornfeldt says, "Sunscreen formulas are complicated, and mixing them with other things reduces the effectiveness of the SPF," adding that if you mix it with other elements, it may no longer be effective.
Then, Dr. Buka explains:
"One adds tan, while the other prevents it. For example, if you were to use equal amounts of Carroten and SPF 30, the protection would be somewhere around SPF 15”, which indicates that such a 'formula' reduces the SPF effect to 50%.
In short: Don't bake in the sun with Carrot alone. If you can't do without it, make sure you mix it with a higher SPF. Dr. Buka suggests mixing with SPF 50.
