Portugal's far-right presidential candidate André Ventura came in second in Portugal's presidential election on Sunday, securing a place in next month's runoff against center-left Socialist candidate António José Seguro.
Ventura's strong showing was another milestone in Europe's shift to the far right, as populist parties have moved closer to the levers of power in recent years.
This was the best result for a socialist candidate since Jorge Sampaio in 2001, who at the time received over 2 million votes.

Israeli forces have wounded several Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, shooting at civilians and launching air and artillery strikes in near-daily violations of the ceasefire in place since October.
According to Palestinian authorities, over 460 people have been killed and more than 1,200 injured since the ceasefire began, while the war in Gaza has caused thousands of casualties and extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure.
