Kate Winslet has slammed "horrific" cosmetic procedures and weight-loss drugs, saying young women today no longer have a "real knowledge of what beauty is." The "Titanic" star, 50, told The Times:
“Oh, it’s terrifying. It’s devastating. If someone’s self-esteem is so tied to their appearance, it’s frightening.”
The actress explained that she enjoys seeing actresses dressed however they want, in whatever shape they are, but pointed out that many people are also taking weight loss drugs.
“Some choose to be themselves, others do everything they can to not be themselves. And do they know what they are putting in their bodies? The disregard for someone else's health is appalling. It worries me more than ever. It is total chaos.”
Aside from criticizing actresses and people who splurge on botox or lip injections, Winslet emphasized that she has not had any plastic procedures.
“My favorite thing is when your hands get old,” she said. “That’s life, in your hands. Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 70, and what bothers me is that young women have no concept of what beauty is.”
The actress also blamed social media for its impact on mental health and the kind of "perfection" people strive to achieve:
"It's infuriating. No one is seeing the world around them anymore."
Kate Winslet has also previously stated that women become more beautiful as they age and has criticized the use of cosmetic injections, although she has admitted to using testosterone replacement therapy to increase sexual desire:
"Women have testosterone in their bodies, and when it runs out, just like eggs, you have to replace it; then you feel sexy again."
