" Barbie " actress Margot Robbie, 35, is reportedly in talks to star in a new version of the much-discussed 2000 film, American Psycho .
The original film starred Christian Bale as the infamous serial killer Patrick Bateman, but according to sources at The Sun , in the new version, the role will be entrusted to Margot Robbie, in a completely different interpretation of the character.
Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho follows the story of an image-obsessed investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer.

Both the book and the film caused great controversy due to violent scenes and explicit descriptions.
"A new version of American Psycho is coming and Margot is the leading candidate to play the female version of Patrick Bateman," a source told British media.
According to the source, changing the protagonist's gender aims to provide a new approach to the story and at the same time silence critics who have called the novel and film misogynistic.
"When the novel came out in the '90s, there was a lot of backlash about the way the figure of women was treated. Having a female killer, the story takes on a completely different perspective," the source added.
He emphasized that this "dark and complex" role will once again showcase Margot Robbie's extraordinary acting skills.

The project is still in the early stages, and details are being determined, but the team working behind the film is "very excited" to start filming.
Ironically, this wouldn't be Robbie's first foray into the world of American Psycho : in 2016, she starred in a parody for Vogue magazine , where she humorously imitated Christian Bale's character in the iconic scene of Patrick Bateman's morning routine.
