20-year-old AL, of Albanian origin and resident of Staten Island, was arrested in Florida along with his mother, with the initials VV, after being accused of causing a tragic accident on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey.
The incident occurred on June 14, when, according to investigations, AL was racing a BMW X3 against another BMW M5 driven by American citizen JO. The fatal collision caused the death of AH, 20, also of Albanian origin and a resident of Staten Island, while another passenger was seriously injured.
Investigators say that after the accident, AL did not stop to help, but attempted to flee the state, traveling to Florida with his mother. The pair were arrested on July 17 near Miami, where authorities say they planned to hide to avoid arrest.
The list of charges against AL is long: first-degree manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crime with fatal consequences, endangering others, driving with a suspended license, and forgery of documents.
His mother and two other people, believed to have been two female passengers present during the incident, also face charges of concealment and aiding and abetting the crime.
