A person with emotional intelligence is very capable of reading others and should know what to and what not to reveal about themselves at work.
Here are some things you should never say at work if you're looking for a promotion:
1. That you hate your job
The last thing anyone wants to hear at work is someone complaining about how much they hate their job. It labels you as a negative person who isn't part of the team. It also hurts the morale of the group.
2. That you think a colleague is incompetent
There will always be incompetent people in every workplace, and chances are everyone knows it. If you don't have the power to help them improve, you're not getting anything out of it. "Declaring" a colleague's incompetence can seem like a half-hearted attempt to make yourself look better.
3. That you are looking for another job
When you reveal that you are looking for another job, you become a waste of time for others. Also, there is a chance that your search will not be successful, so it is better to wait until you have found a job before revealing anything.
4. That you want a promotion!
Announcing your ambitions when they are in direct conflict with the interests of others will come across as selfish and indifferent to your colleagues and the company at large. Announcing your selfish goals will not help you achieve them.
5. How "crazy" you were in the past
Your past can say a lot about you. Just because you did something strange 20 years ago doesn't mean people will believe you've developed perfect judgment since then.
6. How often do you get drunk?
You might think that sharing how much you drank over the weekend won't have any impact on how others perceive you. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Talking about your alcohol or drug use will make you seem irresponsible and unstable.
7. An offensive joke
If there's one thing we can learn from public figures, it's to be careful about what we say and who we say it to. Offensive jokes make others feel terrified and also make you look bad.
