When it comes to food, many of us find ourselves reaching for sweets like cookies, chocolate, or candy. And while a big three-cup ice cream or a piece of chocolate cake may taste great, have you ever wondered why you crave something sweet? The reasons are partly physiological, partly psychological, and partly due to the environment in which we live.
“The human body works a bit like a car – you give it fuel and then it moves,” explains dietitian Anna Taylor. “If the body isn’t getting the right nutrients, then you can develop strong cravings for certain foods.”
A balanced daily intake of fiber-rich carbohydrates, protein, and heart-healthy fats. Taylor explains some of the main causes that lead to sugar cravings:
You don't realize how addictive sugar can be.
One reason we crave sugar is that it tastes good. Many food companies conduct research to determine which ingredients most tempt consumers' taste buds.
“Our brains are programmed to crave things that make us feel good,” says Taylor. “Sugar, in particular, releases chemicals in the brain, like serotonin, that make us feel happy.”
This leaves us wanting to experience that good feeling again and again, day after day. Many people say they are 'sugar addicted,' consuming real sugar and artificial sweeteners in various forms.
You are not eating enough.
Do you think you're "doing well" by just having a coffee for breakfast and a salad for lunch? In reality, you're setting yourself up to eat a lot more in the afternoon and evening.
“If you go too long without eating, your body will crave the quickest source of fuel it can think of—grains and simple sugars,” warns Taylor. These are empty carbohydrates, like chips, cookies, and candy, which are consumed frequently throughout the day and end up as fat deposits.
Are you stressed?
You probably find yourself going through boxes of candy when you're feeling stressed. The next time it happens, take a look at your stress level. Are you worried about an important presentation at work or family drama? Not surprisingly, in stressful situations, all you want is a big bowl of ice cream or some other dessert.
