Former British royal chef Darren McGrady, who worked for Princess Diana from 1993 until her death in 1997, often shares glimpses of life in the royal family's kitchen. In a video on his YouTube channel, he revealed how her favorite breakfast was prepared.
Overnight oats became a trend about a decade ago and are now available in stores for those who don't have time to make their own. But apparently, Princess Diana was enjoying them long before they became popular on social media.
“She had visited a health clinic in Switzerland and that’s where she first tried these ‘overnight oats,’” McGrady says. “Actually, they were called Bircher Muesli and they were invented by a Swiss nutritionist.”
“He took the recipe with him, came back and said, 'Darren, I want to eat this every morning,'” he added.
McGrady, noting that oats are “rich in fiber,” explains how she prepared her favorite breakfast. Instead of letting the oats soak overnight in milk or herbal tea, as is more common today, she used orange juice.
In the morning, she added thick yogurt (Greek yogurt), which is an excellent source of protein, a little honey, and lemon juice. Although you can add any fruit you like, Diana preferred to mix it with apples, nuts, and blueberries.
McGrady admitted that, when preparing this breakfast for Princess Diana, he "doubled the recipe" so he could enjoy it himself.
