Understanding your dreams about an ex is important - to discover more about your inner psyche, but also to save you from rekindling a relationship that absolutely shouldn't be rekindled.
What does it mean when you dream about your ex?
It depends on the dream, which ex you're dreaming about, and the interaction you have with your ex, experts say.
To help, dream interpreter Loewenberg breaks down some of the most common dreams about exes and what they might mean. To start, let's look specifically at the ex you're dreaming about:
If you are dreaming about a recent ex: you are still trying to sort out what went wrong and analyzing the reason for the breakup.
If you are dreaming about an ex from years ago: something is at play in your current life or current relationship that is similar to that of your ex.
If you are dreaming about your first love: the dream may be more about what that person represents, such as excitement and desire. You may be going through a boring period or your current relationship has become too routine and has lost its spark.
If you're dreaming about a toxic ex: it could be because you're feeling insecure or inadequate – whether you're in a relationship or not.
If you dream about breaking up with your ex (or killing your ex): you are ending a relationship you may still have or you are ending a pattern of behavior, such as the tendency to continue to date the same type of person, for example.
If you dream about an ex who left a positive impact on your life: your subconscious wants you to "recognize that positivity within yourself," says Loewenberg.
Why do you keep dreaming about an ex?
There are many reasons why an ex will appear in your dreams. However, in most cases, dreaming about an ex will show you " how much you have grown as an individual or not ," says Loewenberg.
Does dreaming about your ex mean they are thinking about you?
Contrary to what strangers on TikTok tell you, you're not dreaming about your ex because they're thinking about you. "Your dreams are your creation and they're about what's going on in your head," says Loewenberg — they have nothing to do with what anyone else is thinking.
