The tongue is a muscular organ that should look the same for everyone: 'fleshy' and pink. But what does it mean if yours looks different? Does your tongue have 'ripples' or ridges on the sides, which look like marks left by teeth on it? You'll find all the answers to your questions below.
What is a 'mature' language?
If your tongue does not conform to its regular shape, is swollen or has bumps on it, then it is called a 'ripe' tongue. This abnormal shape is found especially around the edges where the tongue meets/touches your teeth.
The main cause of these marks on the tongue is due to the contact of the tongue with the teeth. These teeth marks are usually not a cause for concern; however, it is important to know what causes them.
Teeth marks on the tongue – Causes:
nightmarish
Increased stress and anxiety harm the body in a variety of ways. Some of the problems it causes include jaw clenching, teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, and pressing your tongue against your teeth. Over time, the pressure on your tongue results in the formation of cavities.
Dehydration
Dehydration is one of the most important causes of tongue swelling, which then pushes the teeth to create smooth edges over a period of time.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.
There is a joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull and allows it to move. When someone has TMJ disorder, this joint becomes stuck and misaligned, resulting in teeth-like marks on the tongue.
Sleep disorders
Sleep apnea and teeth grinding or clenching are some of the disorders that can result in increased pressure on the tongue, forming teeth marks. In the case of sleep apnea, you press your tongue against your teeth to open your airway. This can cause the tongue to wave from side to side.
Malnutrition
Your tongue can become deformed if the body does not receive certain vitamins, such as vitamin B, iron, riboflavin, niacin, etc., in sufficient quantities.
Smoking
Smoking is the main reason for increased inflammation in the body and dehydration. These two combine to increase sensitivity to form a 'ripe' tongue.
Hypothyroidism
The body has low levels of thyroid hormones resulting in hair loss, weight gain, fertility problems, and a tongue that looks like it has teeth marks.
Treating a 'mature' tongue
A wavy tongue is usually a symptom of several other medical conditions, so you should treat the underlying cause to eliminate this symptom by consulting the appropriate doctors.
