You're probably already familiar with the benefits of double cleansing, the South Korean practice of using a cleansing oil followed by a milk cleanser. Less well-known, however, are the benefits of double moisturizing, one of the most popular skincare routines in Japan.
The principle of double hydration involves layering very gentle and lightweight skincare products that act synergistically to increase absorption and improve skin hydration.
How to act?
First apply a hydrating toner (also known as a toner), followed by an emulsion (a milky, gel-like moisturizer). The toner hydrates the skin while removing any impurities. It also softens the skin, allowing the skincare products you apply afterwards to absorb into the skin's surface.
The emulsion (layering of products), on the other hand, nourishes the epidermis, reinforcing the skin barrier. Adherents of double hydration claim that after just a few weeks, they see fewer mimic wrinkles, more so than when using moisturizer as usual.
Double moisturizing ritual
In Japan, this skincare step is actually part of an ancient beauty ritual known as Saho, which is essentially about following a precise facial method in order to achieve smooth skin.
Applied morning and night, modern versions of this ritual begin with a double cleanse, followed by a double moisturizer and application of an eye cream. In the morning, an SPF is added to the ritual.
