Have you ever found yourself constantly slathering lip balm on your lips, wondering if it's really helping them or just making them more dependent on it? Is it possible that the more lip balm you use, the more you need?
According to dermatologist Rosalind Simpson from the University of Nottingham, lip balm is not addictive, but there are several reasons why it may seem that way.
Why does it seem like the softener isn't helping?
• They lick their lips without realizing it!
Some people have a habit of licking their lips frequently, which can make them even drier. The scent and taste of the lip balm may encourage this habit, but saliva has an irritating and drying effect, creating a never-ending cycle.
• Dry weather, dry lips!
Temperature changes and humidity take a toll on your lips. Winter, the cold air outside and the heat inside can dry them out even more, creating the need for more emollients.
• You may have a hidden allergy to fabric softener!
Some emollient ingredients can cause irritation or delayed allergic reactions, making you think your lips are simply dry.
How to choose the right softener?
Simpson recommends products with as few ingredients as possible and suggests using pure petroleum jelly, which creates a protective barrier against weather and saliva. This is more effective than emollients that are absorbed into the skin like a moisturizer.
So, the softener is not addictive - but the wrong choice can put you in an endless cycle. If you feel like it's not helping you, maybe it's time to change the product!
